I'll spare you the running commentary on
this one. The unique thing about these sea lions, versus others
that we've come in contact with elsewhere, is that they are completely
unafraid of humans. We literally were able to walk within a few
feet of them, and they wouldn't even stir.
Occasionally, a big male (bulls, or, in
Spanish, machos) would get all worked up and fuss at you a bit, which
was a good indication that you were about to receive a cross-species
ass whoopin' and that you probably ought to head out.

| We were able to snorkel
with them as well, and they were very playful. In fact, I was
able to twirl and spin (as best as I could anyway) with them and
they'd do the same.
At one point, a crowd of people had
joined in the fun and I decided to snorkel off somewhere with a little
more elbow room, and, believe it or not, the two sea lions I was
playing with followed me. |
