Villa Decary Bed and Breakfast

We spent a few days up in Laguna Arenal, a beautiful lake that is bordered by several volcanoes, including one from which it takes its name.  We stayed in a beautiful little bed and breakfast near Neuvo Arenal run by Bill and Jeff, two expat gringos who retired to this beautiful setting to live to good life.

Transportation to, and around, Arenal was pretty challenging given the road conditions and our mode of transportation.  Sondra vigorously denies enjoying having a young Tico stud's butt in her face for the entire 2 hour journey up the mountain (though the rest of us secretly suspect that she'd sign up for that ride again in a heartbeat).  Riding around the lake was a bit perilous because there were sections of the road that had washed down into the lake hundreds of feet below, making them a bit difficult to use.

Beautiful Laguna Arenal

We did finally make it to our little Nirvana, and greatly enjoyed two or three days of nature and relaxing.

We kept hearing funny howling and grunting noises from the forest, and, at first, we all thought it was just Laurie's dad, Bernie (who does indeed make a fair amount of funny howling and grunting noises).  Upon realizing, however, that Bernie really can't climb trees very well, we decided that it must be something else.

Turns out that what we were hearing were Howler Monkeys, which, despite bearing a striking resemblance to Bernie, had lived in Arenal as long as anyone can remember.  Their vocalizations can be heard up to a half mile away!  You can only hear Bernie for about 50 yards before he starts fading out.

Tobacon Hotsprings

We spent one afternoon soaking in some natural hot water springs at the base of Volcan Arenal called the Tobacon Hotsprings.  It was extremely relaxing, although a bit odd to be at a swim-up bar in water that was just below the boiling point.

A stream with water over 100°F! A swim up bar in 95°F water. A hot waterfall makes for good massages
